Articulation Yahtzee

The holidays are a fabulous time of year, but they can also be exhausting! Running here, driving there, cooking this, baking that....so here is a big bundle of activities that will help make your "back to school" (after break) transition a little easier! Plus, who doesn't LOVE Yahtzee? To be honest, I have the Yahtzee App and I often play with my older students as a reinforcer during articulation drill practice.  There is a free version of the app, but I purchased the 99 cent version because they have a game called "rainbow yahtzee" which is too much fun! If my fiance and I don't make it to our wedding day, I can almost guarantee you it will be due to our competitiveness over this very game! :)

My version of Yahtzee focuses on articulation and doesn't require any math except counting up to 25 at the maximum so any math haters out there can stop holding your breath now! If you've ever played any of the kid's versions of Yahtzee (I just scored the Disney princess one for $5.00 on Black Friday) it's more similar to those...much easier rules for our little talkers!

This game bundle includes 22 different Yahtzee like articulation games for early elementary sounds! It includes:3 games (initial, medial, final) of the following sounds: K, G, F, TH, and L; 1 game of the following consonant clusters (S Blends) SK, SP, ST, SL, SN, SM; and 1 game of mixed S Blends in the word medial/final positions. The goal is to get as close to 5 of each picture as possible. Have students roll all 5 dice at one time (I suggest using a brown paper lunch bag or a big cup/pitcher as a “shaker”). Students get three “shakes”, they can keep whatever dice they want each time or re-roll all the dice. On the third roll, students choose what row they want to cover (have students use dry erase markers to cross out the pictures, or use any token-like item to cover the pictures). Each student takes 5 turns, at the end of the 5th turn, whoever has the most Xs or tokens is the winner.

Ideas for sound practice:
Before playing have students point to and practice each word on their card
Have students say each word they roll each time they roll the dice
Have students say their words as they cover them/cross them out on their score card
Have students say their words at the end when they are counting their Xs/tokens
Sounds can be practiced at the word or sentence level

Here's a sample game board.  This one is for ST blends.

Here's a sample of the dice pages. This page is for /L/ in the initial and medial positions.

This game can also be used to target grammar (plurals), verb tense (rolled, covered, etc.), phonemic awareness (find the letters/say the sounds), and as a reinforcer along with any other target stimuli cards which makes it GREAT for those mixed speech AND language groups! Not sure if this will be a good fit for your students? Grab the FREE version from my TPT store to try out it...I'm willing to bet you will be back to purchase the full game!
